About Us

Michael Guerin registered as a pharmacist in 1987 and acquired his first pharmacy in 1988. Since then the business has continued to grow and today MediCare operates 54 busy high volume retail pharmacies which are located in some of the most socially deprived areas of Northern Ireland. Employing over over 600 staff, including 70 pharmacists, MediCare is the biggest indigenous pharmacy group in Northern Ireland. Our head office and distribution centre, comprising of over 60,000 sq ft of warehousing, is located at Montgomery Road in East Belfast.

The MediCare strap line "Caring for your Health" expresses very well our business ethos as our objective has always been to deliver to patients and customers the services and medicines they require in the most efficient and effective manner possible.

In MediCare we pride ourselves on the level of service we deliver and continue to deliver in the healthcare arena. The core competencies of efficient dispensing within a safe and regulated environment are always a priority and we have managed to develop these services by listening to what our patients’ current needs are whilst monitoring developments at Department of Health level to plan, prepare and adapt if necessary for future requirements and services.

In recent years we have been involved in initiatives such as Pharmacist Independent Prescribing. Consultation services such as smoking cessation, weight management and diabetic screening have also been a success within health promotion and were received very well by our patients and colleagues within the primary care setting. MediCare currently supplies in excess of 40 nursing homes across Northern Ireland and as a result has significant expertise in this environment. These services both existing and innovative set us apart from our main competitors both local and nationally who tend to be more retail focused than healthcare focused.

MediCare has invested heavily in new and re-fitted premises and rolled out the installation of consultation areas in all pharmacies. This investment was committed to enable the Group to embrace and take advantage of the extended services such as health promotion and medicines management envisaged within the new Pharmacy Contract.

On the product front, 2008 witnessed the introduction of a new product range, namely Celebrity Slim – a slimming product which has done extremely well in Australia. MediCare was successful in being awarded exclusive distribution and agency rights for Northern Ireland - a further endorsement of the MediCare brand. The associated marketing on TV, radio and outdoor media has increased the profile of MediCare across Northern Ireland and further afield.

Through our strategy of training staff and presenting our pharmacies in key locations to the highest standards, we are looking forward to the MediCare Pharmacy Group playing a leading role in the pharmaceutical profession to meet the challenges of working in the new multidisciplinary setting.

Management Team

Managing Director

He acquired his first pharmacy in 1988 in Bradbury Place, Belfast and has since overseen the growth of the Group to the position today where it incorporates 24 pharmacies trading under the MediCare Pharmacy name.

Since registering as a pharmacist, Michael has played a leading role in most of the pharmacy professional bodies which decide and negotiate the future direction and role of pharmacy in N. Ireland. He is a member and past Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Contractors Committee and past Chairman of the EHSSB Area Pharmaceutical Advisory Committee as well as being a member of the Professional Advisory Panel to Glaxo SmithKline Plc and a member of the Pharmaceutical Standards Working Group. Michael is also a director on the board of the National Pharmaceutical Association representing the interests of Pharmacy in N. Ireland.

Financial Director

Michael Geddis graduated from Queens University Belfast in 1987 with a first class honours degree in economics and in 1988, went on to successfully complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting.

In 1985 he was awarded the Sir William Crawford Scholarship and in 1987 the McKane Medal (First Place Economics) and the KPMG Peat Marwick Prize. Michael began his accountancy training in 1988 with Price Waterhouse passing his Final Admitting Examination in November 1990.

In 1992 he joined the McKay Pharmacy Group as Company Accountant where he was responsible for managing the financial function of the business as it expanded from a base of 3 shops in 1992 to 8 shops in year 2000 which resulted in a four-fold increase in both turnover and employee numbers. During this time, Michael was also responsible for identifying, evaluating, negotiating and integrating pharmacy acquisitions.

Prior to joining MediCare in 2001, Aidan spent most of his career with Belmont Foto Service which he joined in 1987 as Marketing Executive. During his time with Belmont the business changed hands several times. Initially being a family owned business, Belmont was acquired by London International Plc in 1988 who subsequently, in 1995, sold it to the Nashua Corporation of America. Under Nashua, Aidan was promoted to Sales & Marketing Director for Ireland and was appointed to the Nashua Strategic Planning Team in the U.S. In 1997 Nashua decided to divest all their non US businesses and the management team in Ireland were given permission to pursue a management buyout of the Irish business. The team eventually lost out to their main competitor in Ireland, Spectra Photo. Since joining MediCare Aidan has brought a much needed marketing edge to the Group.
